The Path To More
by Pastor Hans

Ever feel like we should be seeing and experiencing more?  More power, more transformation, more miracles, more outpourings of God’s Presence and Spirit, more of what we read about in the New Testament church?

So often we have heard it told that God wants to do great things, that He promised to do them.  I've been thinking about that a lot and one Scripture keeps ringing in my head.

Jesus’ disciples had been doing ministry and seeing great things happen.  They had even come back to Jesus excited about the fact that demons were responding to them and people were being set free.  Healings were taking place, miracles right and left by Jesus and also by His disciples.

Then it happened, a boy possessed by a demon gets brought to the disciples and they couldn't get anywhere.  The frustrated parent brings the boy to Jesus and tells Him, “I brought my son to Your disciples but they couldn't cast the demon out.”

Jesus heals the boy lamenting the faithlessness of those involved but then gives some insight.  Now it is important to note the man asking for his son’s healing made a great statement: “Lord I believe, but help my unbelief.”  Jesus could work with this.

The insight was found later when the disciples asked Him why they couldn't do it.  He said, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

Have we been disappointed and not seen the results we wanted and then simply given up? Have we settled for less than the promises of Jesus that we could do greater things?  The real question is have we paid the price it takes to see more?  Are we on our knees seeking God for the fullness of His work in and through our lives?  Have we crucified our flesh through fasting?

Jesus laid out the path not just with His Words but with what He did.  He often went away to “lonely places” to pray.  Right at the beginning of His ministry, we find Him heading to the wilderness and fasting for 40 days.  He is our example so let us take this path we so often want to skip.

I’m calling for a church wide fast beginning March 10 that will take us up to Resurrection Sunday.  Join me as we take this journey together.  I’m not asking for everyone to fast for 3 weeks (though some may) but am calling for someone from JFC to be fasting during that entire time period.  You may not be able for medical reasons to fast from food but I want to encourage you to ask the Lord how you can participate.  It may be TV, Facebook, Internet, a hobby or interest that you take regular time for.  Whatever it is, let’s push it back to spend time seeking the Lord together.

My prayer, for myself and the whole church is that this would not be an event but the beginning of a regular discipline in our lives.  We will never see the fullness of God’s plan until we seek Him and deny ourselves.

May we see the signs and wonders following us that we would have to explain to others, “this does not happen but by prayer and fasting!”
